San Cristóbal is a beautiful colonial town located in the heart of Chiapas, Mexico. Always been very popular among travelers, San Cristóbal has plenty of beautiful shops, markets and cool places to check out.
We spent three weeks in this gorgeous town and we fell in love with it. San Cristóbal is not only worth a visit. We consider it a perfect place where you could actually live for a while. It offers a perfect blend between city and countryside. Surrounded by indigenous villages, San Cristóbal is a place where ancient customs coexist with modern lifestyle.
COOL PLACES TO CHECK OUT WHILE IN SAN CRISTÓBAL DE LAS CASAS
Start your day in San Cristóbal with a delicious breakfast. Kukulpan is a mix of a cafe and a French-style bakery. We love this place because they offer healthy breakfast using local and organic ingredients. Kukulpan is located in the Cerrillo, considered one of the coolest neighborhoods in San Cristóbal. So grab a coffee, enjoy the chill atmosphere of this cafe and then go explore the neighborhood.
This cultural forum, restaurant, and cinema is a must if you are in San Cristóbal De Las Casas. Kinoki is located a few blocks away from the main pedestrian road. Kinoki is a perfect place to watch a movie or simply drink a beer in the rooftop terrace admiring the city from above. You can participate in one of the many events they organize or rent one of the three small movie theater just for you and your friends. They have many good movies and documentaries to choose from. Definitely a great experience.
Zapatism movement is still a big thing in Chiapas and in San Cristóbal De Las Casas. This political and militant group has lots of supporters among people. This is why it is very easy to find shops, restaurants, and café that promote or sell Zapatistas handy-crafts. Nemi Zapata, located in Maria Adelina Flores 57. It offers a huge variety of colorful posters, postcards, stickers, magnets, and souvenirs of the painter Beatriz Aurora. The aim of this fair-trade shop is to support and facilitate the sale of products of the Zapatista communities. Don’t know about you, but we bought lots of stuff.
Among our list of cool places to check out while in San Cristóbal De Las Casas, we couldn’t mention El Paliacate. This alternative cultural space, with a small restaurant, is a good place to enjoy beautiful art and listen to good live music. El Paliacate in-fact hosts music events and experimental bands. We assisted at a reggae concert and we had so much fun, music was good and the people were very friendly. We know they also have documentary night and theater performances. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see any.
PUNTO Y TRAMA
This tiny boutique offers a beautiful variety of handmade clothes and accessories, but more than this organizes interesting workshops with local artisans. Are you interested in weaving your own fabric? Would you like to experiment with natural coloring? Are you into knitting? These are just a few examples of the workshops offered by Punto y Trama. Of course, we couldn’t’ resist, so we attended an intense weaving workshop with our local teacher Lupita. The traditional weaving technique is called “telar de cintura” a back strap portable loom where the weaver becomes an integral part of the loom itself. It was a beautiful experience but we never thought how difficult and time consuming can be weaving your own fabric.
LA VIÑA DE BACCO
Our list of cool places to check out while in San Cristóbal De Las Casas ends with a glass of wine. Well, La Viña de Bacco is a tiny osteria, owned by two Italian guys, that offers a great selection of good wines. Glasses start from 20 pesos (a dollar) and one tapa is included. This little restaurant \ wine bar is located in one of the main pedestrian streets of San Cristóbal. Very hard to miss it. It was one of our favorite places during our stay in this city, give it a try.
