Bacalar is a quiet town, located in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Also known as the lagoon with seven shades of blue, Bacalar is the relax mecca.
We arrived there after a long bus trip directly from Flores, Guatemala. Our welcome back to Mexico couldn’t be nicer. From the little island of Flores, there is only one company that runs buses to Bacalar. Marlin Espada connects Guatemala to Mexico passing through Belize.
Don’t be scammed by other tour operators: Flores has more touristic companies than habitats and not all of them are reliable. After thirteen hours on the bus, we reached Bacalar and the beautiful Hostel Calma.
We couldn’t ask for a better place!
BACALAR THE RELAX MECCA: A HUNDRED REASONS TO DISCONNECT AND ENJOY THE NATURE
The small town of Bacalar doesn’t have much to offer, but if you are looking for relax, good food and beautiful landscapes, then is definitely the place to go.
An entire day reading a book on the hammock, jumping in the crystal clear water, drinking a beer at the sunset, and counting the stars with the back-sound of the water is what we mostly did.
There are several options if you want to explore more the area. You can rent a kayak (we were too lazy for that) or do a boat tour around the lagoon. Renting a bike is also another option to visit the Blue cenote located 3km away from the town.
The reason why we went there was to relax, to disconnect and enjoy the nature. If you have the same needs, just leave your stress at home, wear your swimsuit and recharge your battery: Bacalar is the relax mecca.
We also mention about good food, well…we had our romantic dinner after a long time at Bote the Leche. Great food, easy going atmosphere, and affordable price.
Another place we would recommend is El Manatì a restaurant but also an art gallery but also a souvenir store… The backyard is very nice, the food is local, the products they sell are fair trade. Most importantly they avoid the use of plastic.
All you have to do is book a flight to Cancun and catch the first bus to Bacalar.
Relax, Recharge and Refresh.

Looks like a lovely escape! Wish I could go there now. I love that El Manati sells fair trade items and reduces plastic waste. Sounds like my kind of business. 🙂
